Governor Kaine has declared May to be Adult Abuse Prevention Month. Listed below are materials to help organizations and individuals educate their communities and increase public awareness about the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older adults and persons with disabilities. This information is distributed through the collaborative efforts of the Virginia Department of Social Services, Virginia Coalition for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, Senior Navigator, Virginia Department for the Aging and several other agencies and organizations. Any handouts, fliers and other materials listed below may be duplicated and distributed as needed.

In fiscal year 2007, Virginia Adult Protective Services received over 13,500 reports of adult abuse, neglect, or exploitation. More than 7,500 of these reports were substantiated. Take a moment to read the Adult Abuse Prevention Month materials and find out how you can improve the safety and well-being of elderly and disabled adults in the Commonwealth.
