  • Virginia Refugee Student Achievement Project

The Virginia Refugee Student Achievement Project is targeted for school aged refugee children, grades K-12, in the geographic areas with the most arrivals. The project targets both newly arrived refugee children and refugee children who arrived in prior years. The geographic areas targeted by this project are Metro-Richmond, Fairfax and Falls Church.

The local school divisions and the resettlement agency are equal partners in this project. The schools will provide English language education, after-school student tutorials, translation services, culturally appropriate student counseling, and culturally and linguistically appropriate parent-teacher counseling. The resettlement agencies will provide school liaisons to assist in identifying refugee students, connecting adult family members to the school environment, training teachers on refugee cultural issues, and improving communication between school and family as well as between school and resettlement agency.
