For Immediate Release
April 29, 2003

RICHMOND -- Governor Mark R. Warner today issued a proclamation declaring April 27 - May 3 as "Volunteer Week" in the Commonwealth of Virginia to recognize Virginians who give communities their time, energy and money through volunteer service.

"Volunteers of all ages, economic and cultural backgrounds and walks of life are finding opportunities through Virginia Corps to help build a stronger, more united Virginia," Governor Warner said in the proclamation. "Volunteerism is increasingly recognized as a central partner with government, education, industry and the arts."

Greg Werkheiser, Chairman of the Virginia Commission on National and Community Service, added, "Volunteers are the helping hand and human face of private and individual enterprise. They are the conscience of our society. They are thoughtful, committed citizens who continue to change the world - one activity at a time."

More than 3.2 million Virginians serve their communities through Virginia Corps, volunteer centers, non-profit organizations, government agencies and national service programs such as AmeriCorps, Retired and Senior Volunteer Programs, Senior Companions, Foster Grandparents, and Learn & Serve Virginia. During the week, many of these organizations will host service projects and recognition events to highlight the extraordinary contributions of volunteers. The Virginia Corps Web site, www.virginiacorps.org, hosts a listing of local volunteer centers and information on how to find volunteer opportunities in Virginia.
