The Temporary Assistance for Needy Families Unemployed Parent (TANF‑UP) program supports families with two able‑bodied parents. It provides short‑term cash assistance and offers services that help parents find and keep employment.
Both parents must participate in the Virginia Initiative for Education and Work (VIEW) program, the employment-services part of TANF, unless one of the parents is excused based on their situation. If they are not excused, parents sign an agreement to stay involved in work activities. As a reward for participation, TANF-UP participants may remain eligible for TANF for up to 24 months from the date that the agreement is signed. The agreement allows TANF-UP participants to earn wages up to 150% of the Federal Poverty Level.
In January 2022, the program received a one-time federal funding increase related to COVID-19 ($1.29 million). This amount is removed to show regular payment totals.
