Reporting New Hires in Virginia

State law requires you to report all new and re-hired employees.

Reporting new hires helps the Division of Child Support Enforcement (DCSE) locate parents who owe support and helps payments be processed more quickly.

  • Virginia law (§ 63.2-1946) requires employers to report newly hired and re-hired employees to the state within a set time frame.
  • Include: employee’s name, address and Social Security Number; and employer’s name, address and Federal Employer Identification Number (FEIN).  

New Hire Reporting Law and Compliance

Virginia law (§ 63.2-1946) requires all employers to report newly hired and re-hired employees and independent contractors to a state directory within 20 days of the employee's start date.

Independent Contractor Reporting Requirement

Virginia law (§ 63.2-1946) requires employers to report independent contractors to the state within a set time. Independent contractors are often called 1099 workers.
