22VAC40-73 RESIDENT CARE AND RELATED SERVICES

Comments:

On 6/5/2019 two inspectors conducted a focused monitoring visit (11:30 am to 12pm) to follow up on a prior high risk violations. Two staff records were checked and a medication cart was checked.

Violations:

Standard #:	22VAC40-73-640-A
Description:	Based on observation, the facility failed to implement a required section of the medication management policy regarding preventing the use of outdated medications. EVIDENCE: 1. The medication cart had a bottle of brimonidine 0.2% for resident 7 marked with an expiration date of 5/20/2019. This was noted on 6/5/2019.
Plan of Correction:	This was corrected during the inspection. In the future, a weekly audit of the medication carts will be done with two people, an RMA and a nurse, to check for open/discard dates, all medications available, etc. . . In addition, the pharmacy will check the carts periodically.
