Comments:
An unannounced complaint inverstigation regarding the facility's failure to follow standard medication administration practice was conducted today from 12:30p -1:30p. As a result of documentation and interviews with resident, family and facilty staff the complaint was determined to be valid and a violation notice was issued.
Please complete the ?plan of correction? and ?date to be corrected? for each violation cited on the violation notice and return it to me within 10 calendar days from today. You will need to specify how the deficient practice will be or has been corrected. Just writing the word ?corrected? is not acceptable. Your plan of correction must contain: 1) steps to correct the noncompliance with the standard(s), 2) measures to prevent the noncompliance from occurring again; and 3) person(s) responsible for implementing each step and/or monitoring any preventive measure(s).

Description: The facility failed to follow standards of practice outlined in the current registered medication aide curriculum approved by the Virginia Board of Nursing.
Evidence:
"PM medication cards" for resident #1 (whose medication is administered by facility staff) were found "on the resident's counter" by a family member during a visit on December 20, 2019.They had been left the previous night by the medication aide.

Plan of Correction: Medications were placed back in the cart as soon as it was made aware on the day that they had been left in the resident #1's room. Health Care Director addressed the medications being left in the resident's room with the staff member involved. Nurses and medication aides will be re-educated on standards of practice for medication administration. Random med pass audits will be conducted on nurses and medication aides to insure that proper nursing standards of practice regarding medication administration are being followed. Person Responsible: Healthcare Director designee. Due Date: January 27, 2020 and on-going.
