Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-73-670-2
Complaint related: Yes
Description: Based on a review of staff records and interviews with staff, the facility failed to ensure that staff who administered medications to residents in the facility had become an applicant for registration as a medication aide by receiving a provisional letter from the Virginia Board of Nursing.

EVIDENCE:

1. The July and August 2021 medication administration records for residents 1 through 5 have the initials of staff persons 1, 2 and 3 on numerous days for the administration of medications to these residents. The record for staff persons 1, 2 and 3 do not contain a provisional medication aide letter from the Virginia of Nursing to qualify them to administer medications for up to 120 days or until they complete the registered medication aid exam. In in interview with staff person 4 on 9/7/2021 it was expressed that staff persons 1, 2 and 3 had not yet received their provisional medication aide letter.

Plan of Correction: Staff members without the provisional letter have been removed from the cart effective the date of the complaint and have not been allowed back on them. We will not allow individuals on the medication cart until a copy of their provisional letter allowing them to practice as a medication aide for 120 days has been giving to us.
