An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted from 12:40pm through 2:15pm. There were 13 children present with two staff, ages 3 to 5 years old. Children's records and staff emergency contact information was reviewed. Staff records are stored in a central location and will be reviewed at a later date. Children were observed engaged in rest room routines, hand washing, lunch and nap. Emergency evacuation drills, required postings, insurance, and required inspections were reviewed. A violation regarding inside temperature was identified and cited.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-40-E Description: Based on observation and interview the center failed to demonstrate operational responsiblitiy including ensuring that the center's own activities, services and facilities are maintained in compliance with these standards. Evidence: 1 - The staff present at the center failed to follow the center's policy regarding notification of management when a heating or cooling issue is present. a. The temperature in the child care ranged from 83 to 86 degrees during the inspection. However, the center did not alert any member of management until they were instructed to do by a person not affiliated with their agency. b. Staff were observed sitting and eating lunch at the onset of the inspection. Both staff 1 and 2 stated that it was warm in the classroom. Plan of Correction: Center management will remind and retrain staff in need for center staff to contact management when there are any issues regarding heating and cooling.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-D Description: Based on observation and interview the center failed to ensure that fans or other cooling systems are used when the temperature on inside areas occupied by children exceeds 80 degrees F. Evidence: 1 - Upon entering the center the temperature on the thermostat read 83 degrees. The temperature on a hand-held thermometer read 86.9 degrees. There were not any fans in use. a. Staff 1 stated that the air conditioner did not appear to be working. Plan of Correction: Once center management were informed of the situation parents were called to pick up children. Going forward staff will be reminded and retrained in procedures and policies regarding allowed temperatures in licensed classrooms.
