63.2 Child Abuse & Neglect

Technical Assistance:
Within six months before being promoted or beginning work or one month after being promoted or beginning work, a minimum of 12 hours of training shall be received related to the care of children, including but not limited to:
(1) Child development;
(2) Playground safety;
(3) Health and safety issues; and
(4) Preventing and reporting child abuse and neglect.

Comments:
An unannounced mandated inspection was conducted this date. A total of 50 children with 10 staff present today. Some classrooms were combined during nap time when the Inspector arrived. Walk thru of all occupied and unoccupied classrooms was conducted. Staff interviews and management interviews were completed. Majority of the classrooms had already transitioned to nap time, and staff were observed sitting beside children on their cots. One classroom was transitioning to nap time after having a book read to them by staff. New paint observed throughout the center, new furnishings and equipment also noticed. The classrooms were current with their programming, artwork coincided with the lesson plan for the week. Classrooms equipped with new books, supplies and furnishings. The center was decorated with fall decorations throughout. A total of 5 children's records and staff records were reviewed today. Reviewed the Center's IPOC and the requirements of the agreement. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-210-A-4-a
Description: Based on staff statements and staff record review, one staff has not completed the required 24 hours lead teacher training within 30 days of being promoted.
Evidence: Staff #1 is in a lead teacher capacity. Staff #1 has not received a total of 24 hours of training in playground safety, child development, preventing child abuse and neglect and health and safety.

Plan of Correction: We will have this training completed for this staff as soon as possible but at the latest within 30 days.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-D
Description: Based on review of emergency preparedness documentation, monthly evacuation drills were not conducted.
Evidence: A fire evacuation drill was not documented as completed for the month of August 2019.

Plan of Correction: We will ensure monthly drills will be conducted monthly and shelter in place drills will be conducted twice a year at a minimum.
