- Technical Assistance:
Today we reviewed the safety precautions for fireplaces when they are used during the hours that children are in care. The home has a gas log fire place in the living room which is open to the area where children are cared for. A baby gate which has a swinging / locking door is installed between the daycare room and the living room and is kept closed and latched at all times that children are in care. At this time, none of the children are potty trained and are not required to walk past or through the living room. As children get older and need to access the restroom, the licensee will need to install a sturdy barrier directly around the fireplace to ensure a child does not touch the flames or fall against the screen which pulls across the opening. Children in care must NEVER have access to the fireplace when it is lit.
A monitoring inspection for the Renewal of the provider?s Family Day Home license was conducted on 1/22/2019 from 12:15 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. At the time of entrance, 3 children, ages 6months to 17 months old were in care, for a total of 11points with the provider. The records sample size consisted of 3 children?s records and 3 provider / Household member records. Children were observed resting on mats and in cribs, playing with a variety of toys, dancing to music and interacting with the provider and each other. The provider stated that she does not administer medication to children in care at this time, does not have any children currently enrolled who have diagnosed food allergies and that there have been no accidents or injuries incurred by children in care requiring first aid or medical care. Children are not transported in a vehicle while in care. Unmet licensing standards were cited and appear on the violation notice. Thank you for your time during today's inspection. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of assistance.
Standard #: 22VAC40-111-170-A Description: Based on a review of records and interview, the licensee did not obtain from each caregiver at the time of hire and each adult household member prior to coming into contact with children a current Report of Tuberculosis Screening form published by the Virginia Department of Health or a form consistent with it documenting the absence of tuberculosis in a communicable form. Evidence: The records for three household members were reviewed today. Household member #3 who has been residing in the home since October 2018 did not have the results of a TB Screening available. When asked for this documentation, the licensee stated that she had not obtained it because she was not aware of the requirement. Plan of Correction: The licensee stated that she was unaware that adults not caring for the children were required to have a Tuberculosis screening. The licensee states that she will household member #3 obtain a TB screening and place results in his record by February 5, 2019.
