Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included strategies for accessing the bathrooms from the classroom. We also discussed alternative entrances and exits, given the current construction situation.

An unannounced monitoring inspection took place today on a Teacher Work Day from 11:20 am - 12:35 pm. There were 14 children present with 2 staff. Staff and children were relocated to this room this morning after Spring Break. Staff reported that everyone arrived to a room with everything still in boxes or pushed against the wall, except for tables and chairs. Two staff unpacked as best as they could while providing activities for children and planning an afternoon basketball field trip to another school. Records such as previous emergency practice drills; injury reports and other required items were not accessible for review today. Of special concern for staff is supervision given the extreme distance to the children's bathrooms, especially the girls' bathroom. Both are upstairs from the classroom. The nearest bathroom for girls to use (the school adult bathroom) was estimated today to be 273 feet (plus 12 stairs) from the classroom. Elementary school staff do not expect a closer bathroom to be completed anytime soon. If you have any questions, please contact me at Please note: my phone number has changed to 703 304-9609.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B
Description: During today's inspection, some hazardous items were observed not to be in a locked place. Evidence: Two cans that carry warnings about inhalation hazards were observed on a shelf and on a desk during the inspection. One was a spray adhesive and the other (Innovera) was a computer dusting spray. Additionally, the boy's bathroom door was observed to be propped open with a bag of cement mixture.

Plan of Correction: They will be locked up. We will talk to the construction crew about removing the concrete bag.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-320-D
Description: During today's inspection, the only restroom available to girls was an adult -size toilet which may not be counted in the number required toilets for children unless children are allowed unrestricted acccess to the toilet. (320-D) Evidence: The girls bathroom has not yet been constructed. Staff reported that the current bathroom for girls' use is the adult staff bathroom for the elementary school which would not provider unrestricted access, especially during Teacher Work Days and other events.

Plan of Correction: We will be talking to the office about this.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-B
Description: A review of classroom records today found that the documented emergency preparedness plan available today did not contain procedural components for evacuation or shelter-in-place from the current room.

Plan of Correction: This will be updated.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-550-C
Description: Emergency evacuation and shelter in place procedures/maps were not posted as required in the classroom today.

Plan of Correction: We will make new ones and post them.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-560-F
Description: There was no posted menu available for parents today.

Plan of Correction: We will make sure it is posted.
