- Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included: bathroom supervision and the definition of "supervision that provides for immediate intervention" for classrooms down the hall from bathrooms. Diapering area: The one diapering area between the toddlers and two's does not provide for steps for children in the two's room; and when one staff is present (as was today,) staff report this involves lifting the child to the diaper table and not facing the class while diapering, leaving seven children out of direct site.
An unannounced monitoring inspection took place today from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm. There were 62 children present with 13 staff. I observed schoolagers busy with a "vet" clinic with stuffed animals from home and building with legos and blocks; preschoolers engaged in dramatic play and listening to a story; and children eating lunch and preparing for naptime. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A Description: During today's inspection, some areas and equipment in the center were observed to not be maintained in a clean/safe/operable condition. Evidence: In the school-age room today, 12 long cartons of 5 x 3 bulletin boards were observed to be leaning against the wall, near where children were playing. The vent in the three year old room above the back door was observed to be extremely dusty & dirty. There were several areas of peeling green paint at child height observed in a toddler room. Long screw backs were rusty & accessible on the bottom of all children's toilets. An area where the gate attached between the toddlers and two year old room was missing some bolts, leaving sharp edges that could scratch skin. In one toddler room, art supplies (bottles of paint and a large roll of paper) were observed to be stacked on a narrow rod near where children were playing, creating a potential hazard. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-430-B Description: During today's inspection, a craft material was observed in an art activity available to toddlers that was not age or stage appropriate. Evidence: Small craft pieces less than 1/2 inch in width were used for a pasting activity with toddlers, and then posted in the room where any unglued pieces would be accessible to toddlers.
