COMPLAINT # 47739 An unannounced complaint investigation took place to review the following standard: 340A: Staffing and Supervision: When staff are supervising children, they shall always ensure their care and protection. Records were reviewed and staff were interviewed. Based on findings, the complaint was deemed to be valid. A Plan of Correction was given to the director. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-340-A Complaint related: Yes Description: Based on a review of records and staff interviews, when staff were supervising a child on June 12, they were not always insuring the care and protection of that child in care. Evidence: Child #1 has a medical condition that requires monitoring of the child's blood glucose levels which includes, among other things, the inputting of data into an insulin pump based on the carbohydrate level of the child's meal or snack. 1. At 3:30 pm on June 12, 2017, staff did not enter the carbohydrate count into the insulin pump. Since the purpose of the pump is to calculate the amount of insulin needed based on the carbohydrate count and blood glucose level, the amount of insulin provided through the insulin pump after snack was inaccurate following the snack. 2. During today's inspection, it was noted that the alarm system (I-pad operated) provided by the family that sends alarms to staff cell phones to signal rising and lowering glucose levels was not sounding as it had been during a previous inspection, leaving staff unable to follow the plan of action on a consistent basis.
