Comments:
Thank you for your time and assistance with the unannounced renewal inspection conducted January 29, 2020. The on-site inspection was from 10:20 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. On this date, at the time of arrival, there were 38 children present in three classrooms and in the care of 10 staff members. The total enrollment for the program was 40 children. The exception to compliance was noted on the violation notice and the risk rating for the violation was documented on the supplemental page. The violation from the previous inspection had been corrected. There were five staff members' records and five children's records reviewed. All three classrooms were toured and observations were made in two of those rooms. The medication and medication paperwork were reviewed for three children. Interactions were made with five children and interviews were conducted with six staff members. Some items observed/reviewed included: updated health and fire inspections, injury reports, required posted information, documentation of emergency drills and shelter-in-place drills, documentation of liability insurance, warm water temperature, outdoor play, infant feeding and care, children exploring within the classrooms, diaper changing procedures, hand washing and bathroom procedures, lunch, cleaning and sanitizing of feeding tables, administration of medication, and nap time.

Please contact your licensing inspector, Diann Reed, if you have questions concerning this inspection, the licensing standards, and/or if I may be of assistance to you (540) 280-0742.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-A
Description: Based on the 01/29/2020 review of the medication and medication paperwork for three children, the medication for one child did not have written authorization from the parent allowing the center to administer the medication.

Evidence:
1. The parent of Child A brought to the center a prescription medication to be administered to the child as needed. The parent had not signed the paperwork authorizing the center to administer the medication. The medication was administered to the child on 01/29/2020.
2. The director verified there was no written parental authorization.

Plan of Correction: The director will obtain the parent's written authorization as soon as possible and will speak with appropriate staff members to ensure authorization paperwork is complete before accepting any medication from a parent.
