- Technical Assistance:
One of the metal support posts (by the canopy) inside the preschool playground area is not thoroughly covered with cushioning. The cushioning must be sufficient to ensure that the posts that protrude approximately 3 inches above the ground are not potential protrusions or tripping hazards for the children. Fire department and health department inspections will be reviewed during the next monitoring inspection.
An unannounced, mandated monitroing inspection was conducted today. The inspector arrived at 1:15 PM and departed at 2:45 PM. Five children were in care with four staff. Today is the first day that care is bring provided to the children this season. Np time and the outside play area were observed. A sample size of five staff records and five children's records were reviewed. No children's injuries were reported and staff stated that there is currently no medication to be administered to the children in care. The facility is currently not providing transportation due to busing issues. An exit meeting was conducted with front office staff prior to closure of the inspection.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-280-B Description: Based upon observation and staff interview, the facility has not ensured that hazardous substances are kept in locked places using a safe locking method that prevents access by children. Evidence: 1. The storage closet in the preschool classroom was unlocked. On a shelf in the closet were 2 cans of chalkboard paint labeled "warning, keep out of reach of children". There was also a gallon bottle of bleach on the floor by the water heater labeled "danger, keep out of reach of children". 2. The storage closet between the toddler classroom and the preschool classroom where, according to the staff, the children passed through to reach the preschool classroom, was unlocked. On the floor in the closet were six, gallon bottles of bleach labeled "danger, keep out of reach of children". Plan of Correction: The facility responded with the following: Today is the first day that children have been in care. All staff will be reminded that storage closets must be kept locked at all times when children are in care. Closets were locked during the inspection.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-450-A Description: Based upon observation and staff interview, the facility has not ensured that cots during the designated rest period have linens consisting of a top cover and a bottom cover. Evidence: Four children were napping in the preschool classroom. There was no bottom cover on any of the four cots in use by the children. Staff stated that the linens were currently being laundered. Plan of Correction: The facility responded with the following: All staff will be reminded that cots must have a bottom cover and a top cover when in use by children at nap time.
