Children's Harbor - Suffolk
1020 Champion's Way
Suffolk, VA 23435
(757) 483-2693

Current Inspector: Heather Harrell (757) 334-4329

Inspection Date:

Complaint Related: No

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-350-E-2
Description: Based on observation, interviews and a review of documentation, it was determined that the licensee did not ensure that whenever children are in care ages 16 months to two years old, a ratio of one staff member for every five children is maintained. Evidence: 1. The Licensing Inspectors observed 14 children and two staff present in the Green (Two year old) classroom. Child #1 (23 months old) was present in the classroom. 2. Staff #1 (Program Director) confirmed that the proper staff-to-child ratio for child #1 was not being maintained.

Plan of Correction: The facility responded: I have spoken to Mom about the situation and she did write a letter agreeing that the older class is a great place for her son. However I am very aware of the ratio. Whenever the younger team has an opening (often these days due to illnesses) we move child #1 down to the Red 2 class. If there is not an opening in Red 2 we attempt to move children from Green 1 to Green 2. If that is not an option then the Assistant Director will go into the Green 1 class as the 3rd teacher. We will continue to monitor all class rooms to ensure ratios are meet throughout the center.
