63.2(17) License & Registration Procedures

Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was completed on 2/11/2020. There were 22 children present in two groupings with four staff directly supervising. Five children's records were reviewed and six staff records were reviewed. Four emergency medications were reviewed for three children in care.

The inspector arrived at the center at 9:45 am and departed at 1:40 pm.

The children were observed during free time, during movement activities, during lunch, and during nap.

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-420-A
Description: Based on review of policies and procedures, the center failed to ensure that parents received in writing the required policies and procedures of the center required by these Standards.

Evidence:
1. The parent handbook was missing the following required policies and procedures: the current food policy, unacceptable discipline measures.

Plan of Correction: The director will add the missing items to the parent handbook.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-510-C
Description: Based on review of policies and procedures and interview, the center failed to ensure that the medication policies included all of the center's procedures for administering medication.

Evidence:
1. The center did not have a procedure for methods to prevent use of outdated medication.

Plan of Correction: The director will add this procedure to the medication policy.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-520-A
Description: Based on observation, the center failed to ensure that all nonprescription drugs and over-the-counter skin products were used in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Nonprescription drugs and over-the-counter skin products shall not be kept or used beyond the expiration date of the product.

Evidence:
1. There were three sunscreens observed that were kept beyond the expiration dates. The sunscreens expired October 2019, December 2019, January 2020.

2. There was one diaper ointment that was kept beyond expiration. The diaper ointment had an expiration date of January 2020.

Plan of Correction: The director will talk with staff about a procedure for checking over-the-counter skin products monthly.
