22.1 Early Childhood Care and Education
- Technical Assistance:
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) assumed oversight of child care licensing and monitoring on July 1, 2021. All associated regulations and codes have transferred over from the Virginia Department of Social Services. Guidance, resources and training links can be found on the new website childcareva.com.
A Monitoring inspection was initiated today. This inspection was conducted by licensing staff using an alternate remote protocol, including telephone contacts, documents review, interviews and a virtual tour of the program. The director was contacted by Zoom and a virtual inspection was conducted. There were a total of 65 children present with 16 staff. The inspector reviewed compliance in the areas of administration, physical plant, staffing and supervision, programming, medication, special care and emergencies and nutrition. A total of 5 child records and 3 new staff records were reviewed. Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations and were documented on the violation notice issued to the program. Standard #: 22.1-289.036-A Description: Based on staff record review, not all background checks were completed for one staff.
Staff #1 was hired on 09/01/2021. An out of state Sex Offender search and an out state Central Registry search request was not completed.
Plan of Correction: The Sex Offender search was completed and results were received on 12/7/2021 and the Central Registry was completed and results were received on 12/8/21.
Standard #: 8VAC20-780-430-E Description: Based on observation of the Gross Motor Classroom, one piece of climbing equipment was over 6 feet tall.
A rock climbing wall was installed that is over 6 feet tall in height. Indoor preschool equipment can not be over 6 feet in height.
Plan of Correction: This equipment was taken down.
Standard #: 8VAC20-780-430-G Description: Based on observation of the Gross Motor Classroom, indoor equipment over 36 inches did not have adequate resilient surfacing.
The rock climbing wall is over 36 inches in height and was located over a carpet which does not meet the definition of resilient surfacing.
Plan of Correction: This climbing equipment was taken down.
