22.1 Early Childhood Care and Education

Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted with the director and owner of the center. There were 85 children in care ages 4 months through 5 years old under the care and supervision of 15 staff. Infants were observed being held and fed and sleeping. Toddlers and two year olds were observed during nap. Preschoolers were observed finishing lunch, during transition time and preparing for nap. Lunch today was turkey and cheese sandwiches, peas, banana and graham crackers.

Six children's records and seven staff records were reviewed. Staff trainings were reviewed. Emergency drills, liability insurance are up to date.

Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the program.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-440-E
Description: Based on observation, not all occupied nap mats were at least 12 inches apart. Evidence: In the toddler B classroom, five occupied cots were observed in close proximity to one another and were not spaced at least 12 inches apart. Two cots were approximately six inches apart and their blankets were touching one another. Three other cots were very close, approximately 1/2 inch to 1 inch apart with blankets/linens touching one another.

Plan of Correction: verbal communication on 1/26/2023, written reminder for all staff on 1/30/2023

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-450-A
Description: Based on observation, not all nap mats had required linens. Evidence: In the toddler B classroom, one child's mat was missing a bottom linen. In the Preschool 1B class, one child's missing a bottom linen, one child was missing a top linen.

Plan of Correction: verbal communication on 1/26/2023, written reminder for all staff on 1/30/2023

Description: Based on observation, children's hands weren't washed as required. Evidence: In the Preschool 2 B classroom, children were observed finishing lunch and going to their nap mats without washing their hands after the meal as required.

Plan of Correction: Corrected on the spot; then followed up with written staff reminder for all staff
