Technical Assistance:
Discussed new guidance for Spring rockers are considered playground equipment and based on information found in the Public Playground Safety Handbook (p. 36), the fall height is the distance between either (1) the highest designated playing surface or (2) the seat, whichever is higher, and the protective surfacing beneath it. Also discussed guidance that resilent surface is needed for Merry -go -cycles. Merry-go-cycles may be best described as a 'merry-go-round' which is a rotating platform in which children can get on and off, sometimes while the equipment is still moving. This type of equipment is described on p. 31 of the Public Playground Safety Handbook and resilient surfacing is required. However, providers will need to select the appropriate surfacing type to ensure that the functionality is not impacted and the equipment can be used safely.

Reviewed over the requirement for health inspection, injury reports and attendance.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted on October 26, 2023 from 8:50am- 10:30am. At the time of entrance, 27 children were in care with 6 staff members present. Additional staff was present to assist. The sample size consisted of 3 children records and 3 staff records. Children were observed outside on the playground, working on colors and animal recogonition and freely playing.

Areas of non-compliance are identified on the violation notice.

Description: Based on observation, the licensee did not ensure areas of equipment of the center inside and outside is maintained in a clean, safe and operable condition.

Evidence:
The staff bathroom door does not close or open properly. To close the door you need to lift the door up.

The door in the toddler classroom will not close or open properly.

The book shelf in the toddler had sharp edges.

Plan of Correction: Book case will be replaced.

A work order will be put in for both doors.
