Comments:
A renewal inspection was initiated on 2/12/24 and concluded on 2/12/24. There were 31 children present with 10 staff supervising, two administrative staff and one cook present. The inspector reviewed compliance in the areas of administration, physical plant, staffing and supervision, programming, medication, special care and emergencies and nutrition. A total of five child records and six staff records were reviewed. The inspection started at 9:55 am and concluded at 1:40 pm.

Information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with applicable standards or law and violations were documented on the violation notice issued to the program.

Violations:
Standard #: 8VAC20-780-240-A
Description: Based on record reviews the center failed to ensure that all staff complete the VDOE sponsored orientation course within 90 calendar days of employment.
Evidence:
Staff #5 (hire date 10/2/23) does not have information on file that the VA preservice training was completed.

Plan of Correction: Staff #5 has completed the Virginia Preservice training. Going forward we will ensure that all new employees complete the VDOE sponsored orientation with in 90 days of their hire date.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-280-B
Description: Based on observation the center failed to ensure that hazardous substances such as cleaning materials, insecticides, and pesticides shall be kept in a locked place using a safe locking method that prevents access by children.
The bathroom cabinet above the toilet was unlocked and open. Inside was Peroxide and Repel Deet 23%. Three classrooms use this bathroom.

Plan of Correction: Staff has been informed to keep all hazardous substances in a locked place to prevent access by children.

Standard #: 8VAC20-780-560-L
Description: Based on observation the center failed to ensure that staff shall sit with children during meal times.
Evidence:
The staff did not sit with the children during lunch in three of the classrooms. (toddlers, 2 year-4 year combined class, 4-5 year class)

Plan of Correction: Staff has been informed to sit with the children during meal times.
