- Technical Assistance:
Over time grass loses its ability to absorb shock through wear and environmental conditions. Providing protective surfacing material under and around outdoor play equipment may reduce injuries if a child falls from the equipment.
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted from 9:15 a.m. to 11:20 a.m. At the time of entrance, 6 children, ranging in age from 16 months to 4 years old, totaling 14 points were in care with the provider. The records sample size consisted of 2 children?s records and 2 provider / assistant/ household member records. Children were observed engaged in free play, playing at the table with play-doh, eating a snack of crackers and raisins (bananna for toddler) and brushing teeth. Hand washing, restroom procedures and table sanitizing were also observed. Medication administration was not observed. The provider stated that no medication is administered to children in care at this time. Areas of non-compliance are identified on the violation notice. Thank you for your time during today's inspection. Please do not hesitate to contact me if I may be of assistance. The licensee provided verbal responses to the violations during the inspection, which were entered on to the violation notice by the Licensing inspector.
Standard #: 22VAC40-111-500-C Description: Based on observation, the provider did not ensure that stationary outdoor play equipment is not installed over concrete, asphalt, or any other hard surface. Evidence: The inspector observed a new piece of stationary outdoor play equipment in the provider's back yard. The set contained 3 swings and a slide. Though there was grass in much of the yard, the swing and slide set had only compacted dirt under and around it. This compacted dirt does not offer cushioning if a child jumps of falls off of the play equipment. Plan of Correction: The provider stated that she will explore the options for installing resilient surfacing under and around the play equipment and will put a plan into place to have it installed within 30 days.

The Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) is not responsible for any errors in or omissions from the compliance history information.Virginia Quality is a voluntary quality rating and improvement system for early care and education facilities serving children ages birth through pre-K.
