Discussed where to find different resources for trainings. Discussed the renewal. Discussed background checks with the provider.
An unannounced renewal visit was conducted today between the hours of 9:30am through 12:00pm with the provider on site. There were 3 children (12 points) with the provider and the assistant. A sample of 3 children's files and 2 staff/household member's files were reviewed. The children were engaged in the following: toy play. Interactions between the children and staff were positive. The physical space, emergency supplies, evacuation drills, attendance records and the Emergency Preparedness Plan were reviewed. The site was clean and organized. Areas of non-compliance are identified in the violation notice. Please complete the columns for "Plan of Correction" and "Date to be Corrected" for each violation cited on the violation notice, and then return a signed and dated copy to the licensing office within 5 business days of receipt. Standard #: 22VAC40-111-210-A Description: Based on record review, the caregivers did not obtain a minimum of 16 hours of training annually. Evidence: 1. The provider had documentation of completing 5 hours of training in 2018 and did not complete 16 hours of training. Plan of Correction: In all my years in business I have always paid for private continuing education classes as opposed to the free ones offered by the state mainly because the private classes are given during the weekend whereas the state ones, though free, are given during the week when we are supposed to have children in our care. Over the years I have personally covered the costs for myself and two assistants for such training as encouragement to my assistants and to avoid shutting down during the week. For us to go with the state conducted training schedule which is free means the daycare must be shut down during that time and parents left with the inconvenience of looking for temporary care. I have been advocating for the state licensing department to offer training during the weekend to prevent the daycare having to shut down. I will continue to search for weekend classes for myself and my staff. I have also found some online training courses that can be taken after daycare hours.
Standard #: 22VAC40-191-60-C-2 Description: Based on record review, the family day home did not have a central registry finding within 30 days of employment for an Assistant that was rehired. Evidence: 1. Assistant #1 was rehired on 10/08/2018 and the provider did not obtain the central registry findings within 30 days of the rehire date. The provider had documented that Assistant #1 was terminated from employment on 9/22/2017 and returned on 10/08/2018 and had been gone more than 12 consecutive months. Plan of Correction: The assistant in question is not a new employee and has worked in my daycare since 7/08/13. She stopped working full time 9/22/17 and stayed on a temporary basis until her travel overseas in May 2018. She finally returned to my daycare 10/8/2018 and has been working here since then. She has worked in my daycare for 5 years and her first central registry search was completed on 7/18/13 and valid through 7/18/16. Her second and current search was on 8/4/16 and valid 08/04/2019. I was unaware that she needed to re-do the search after a travel abroad. At this time she has mailed in her third central registry search.
Standard #: 63.2-1720.1-B-2 Description: Based on record review, the provider did not obtain the fingerprint results for a caregiver. Evidence: 1. Assistant #1 began employment with the provider on 10/08/2018 and the provider did not have the fingerprint results during the inspection. Plan of Correction: The assistant in question is not a new employee as alleged by the inspector and has worked in my daycare since 7/08/13. She stopped working full time 9/22/17 and stayed on a temporary basis until her travel overseas in May 2018. She finally returned to my daycare 10/8/2018 and has been working here since then. She has worked in my daycare for 5years and her first criminal history record search was completed on 7/11/13 which expired 7/11/16. Her second criminal history record search was completed on 7/21/16 and valid until 7/21/19.
My plan was to schedule my assistant?s finger printing close to 7/21/19 when her criminal history record search would be expiring.
As the requirement is now changed we have now scheduled an appointment for her fingerprinting.
