Technical Assistance:

HB1823 adds ? 22.1-289.058 to the Code of Virginia. This bill requires all licensed child day programs and religiously exempt child day centers, certified preschools, family day system homes and certain other programs that serve preschool-age children operating in a building built before 2015 to be equipped with at least one carbon monoxide detector. Standard 900: To assist in preventing choking, food that is hard, round, small, thick and sticky, or smooth and slippery such as whole hot dogs sliced into rounds, nuts, seeds raisins, uncut grapes, uncut raw carrots, peanuts, chunks of peanut butter, hard candy, and popcorn shall not be served to children under four years of age unless the food is prepared before serving in a manner that will reduce the risk of choking.

Comments:

This inspection was conducted by licensing staff using an alternate remote protocol, including telephone contact, document review, and an interview with the provider. A monitoring inspection was initiated on 1/20/2022 and concluded on 1/26/2022 with an exit interview. The provider was contacted by telephone and a virtual inspection was conducted. There were six children present, ranging from nine months to five years of age, with the provider supervising. The inspector reviewed compliance in the areas of administration, household members, physical health of caregivers and household members, caregiver training, physical environment and equipment, care of children, preventing the spread of disease, medication administration, emergencies and nutrition. A total of two child and one caregiver records were reviewed and in compliance. The information gathered during the inspection determined non-compliance with one applicable standard or law and the violation was documented on the violation notice issued to the program. Please complete the columns for "Plan of Correction" and "Date to be Corrected" for each violation cited on the violation notice, and then return a signed and dated copy to the licensing office by 4:00pm on Tuesday, 2/1/2022. Description:	Based on review of documentation, and an interview with the provider, not all meals and snacks provided by the family day home follow the most recent, age-appropriate nutritional requirements of a recognized authority such as the USDA. Evidence: the menu dated 1/10-1/14/2022 did not include: 1) a meat or meat alternative for lunch on 1/12 or 1/14/22; 2) a fruit or second vegetable for lunch on 1/10, 1/11, or 1/13/22; 3) a second component with the am snack (milk/meat or meat alternative/fruit/vegetable) on 1/11, 1/13, or 1/14/22; 4) a second component with the pm snack (milk/meat or meat alternative/fruit/vegetable) on 1/12, or 1/13; 5) two components for the pm snack on 1/10, 1/11 and 1/15/22 (grain-based desserts and fruit snacks are not components of the meal plan.
