Comments:
An unannounced renewal inspection was conducted on 12/06/23 from 10:10 a.m. to 11:26 a.m. with the provider. There were seven children in care, ranging in age from two to four-years-old, for a total of 14 points. Children were observed watching an educational program and making holiday crafts. Six child records and one caregiver record were reviewed. The provider has current certification in CPR and First Aid. No medications were on site. The first aid kit, flashlight, weather band radio, and fire extinguisher were observed. The emergency drill log, attendance, and menu were also reviewed. Areas of non-compliance are identified in the Violation Notice. Violations:
Standard #: 8VAC20-800-240-A
Description: Based on observation, the Provider did not ensure that areas and furnishings of the family day home, inside and outside were maintained in a safe condition.

Evidence: In the dramatic play area, the corner of a carpet was curled up creating a trip hazard.

Plan of Correction: Today. 12/06/2023, I rotated the rug around. I will be more observant of area rugs rotating when needed. Replace or remove from play areas.

Standard #: 8VAC20-800-320-B
Description: Based on observation, the provider did not ensure that child-resistant protective covers were installed on all unused electrical outlets accessible to children under five years of age.

Evidence: There was one electrical outlets uncovered in the programming space with seven children under five years of age present.

Plan of Correction: Today, 12/06/2023, I installed a protective cover in the outlet. I will be even more diligent ensuring electrical outlets are always covered.

Standard #: 8VAC20-800-630-B
Description: Based on observation, the provider did not ensure when time out is used as a discipline technique it was used sparingly and not to exceed one minute for each year of the child?s age.

Evidence: During the inspection, Licensing Inspector observed two, three-year-old children sitting at empty tables from 10:15 a.m. to 10:35 a.m. An interview with the provider revealed that the children were placed at separate tables away from the group because they were not participating in group activities.

Plan of Correction: I will ensure any child not participating in group activities or in time out will be given an activity to explore until rejoined with peers. The discipline technique will be used sparingly and will not exceed one minute for each year of a child's age.
