Staff reported that the children are drawn to the stacked cots and use them for climbing. A suggestion was made to store the cots in an area away from the window so that children can have a view to the outside. Stacked cots could also be covered to prevent children from climbing up on them.
An unannounced Renewal inspection was conducted in the Center on December 6, 2016. There were 29 children present. The LI observed the children in two classrooms. Each classroom was staffed with 2 staff members. An additional administrative staff member was also present in the Center. The LI observed the children as they participated in various activities which included: music, nap/rest time, afternoon snack, and dismissal procedures at the end of the program day. A majority of the children are transported by center/school bus. A discussion was held with the Lead Teacher regarding the arrangement of children's furniture and a potential tip-over hazard. She reported that a request would be filed with Center Supervisor to have the furniture secured/mounted. As observed on inspection date, classroom A. did not follow the posted schedule for nap/rest time from 12:00 to 1:00pm. The LI entered the room at 11:30am, the lights were off and children were on their cots. The volume of the music in the room was loud and children were moving around on their cots and talking to one another. The majority of the children did not sleep during the designated rest time. The lights were turned back on at 12:45pm. Staff reported that the schedule was off due to the children not having outdoor play based on the rainy weather. A suggestion was made to provide a substitute gross motor activity such as dance/exercise when children can not go outdoors for play. Dismissal from the class to the bus was at 1:10pm. A sample of 4 children's records was reviewed. Documentation of the annual fire and health inspections was current. One partial staff record was also reviewed. Complete staff records are maintained off site at the administration office, a sample of 3 records was reviewed on December 21, 2016. Due to rain and fog, the fenced outdoor playground was not inspected on this date. The inspection concluded at approximately 2:00 PM. If you have any questions, please e-mail or call (540)309-2310. Standard #: 22VAC40-185-450-D Description: Based on direct observations, during nap time a pillow used by a child was not assigned for individual use. Evidence: 1. The LI observed a child asleep on his cot with a red pillow. After nap time, the LI observed the pillow and it was not labeled for individual use. 2. Upon inquiry with staff, staff reported that the pillow was furnished by the center for the reading area and she was not aware the child had the pillow on his cot. Plan of Correction: Staff will remove the pillow cover and send it to be laundered. Staff will monitor to ensure center pillows are not used for nap/rest time.
