22VAC40-185 STAFFING AND SUPERVISION.
An unannounced "other" inspection was conducted on 2/15/2017 in response to an incident that occurred on 2/7/2017. The center director self-reported an incident involving the use of a hot glue gun that resulted in a child receiving a burn to the finger. Based on the information gathered the center was found to be in violation of standard 430.B. This violation was reviewed with the center director during the exit interview on 3/30/2017.
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-430-B Description: Based on interview and record review, the center failed to ensure that materials and equipment available shall be age and stage appropriate for the children for each age group of arts and crafts materials. Evidence: Staff #1 failed to ensure that the materials & equipment used in a craft activity was age appropriate for a two-year old child as described by the following incident: 1. Staff #1 was facilitating a craft activity with a two-year old child on 2/7/2017 at approximately 11:15am. This activity involved the use of a hot glue gun. 2. Staff #1 placed the hot glue on a pom pom and gave the pom pom to the child. The child touched the hot glue with his finger. a. The child's right index finger was burned from the glue. b. Staff #1 stated that the child's finger was red and required first aid which included an application of cold water and an ice pack. c. The child cried when he touched the hot glue that had been applied to the pom pom according to staff #1. 3. The manufacturer of most glue guns and CPSC recommend that glue guns are age appropriate for children ages eight years and up. Plan of Correction: Immediately removed hot glue gun. Per KinderCare policy hot glue guns are not allowed. Staff was counseled in regards to use of hot glue gun in the center.
