Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included: supervision of activities that involve small pieces and wearing costumes (capes) while outdoors. We also discussed that changes to fingerprints for background checks have been postponed until next year.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection was conducted today from 10:30 - 12:00 pm. There were three classrooms present with 25 children and 7 supervising staff. I observed children paint butterfly "paintblots" and discuss the developing caterpillar crysalis they were observing. I also saw impromptu instances of dramatic play such as inviting everyone to a ball and discussions of storage of trucks. I also observed creative block building and the excitement of witnessing science "volcanoes." If you have any questions, please contact me at brenda.kuhlman@dss.virginia.gov

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A
Description: During today's inspection, some areas of the playground were observed to have some unsafe conditions. Evidence: There were some splintering areas of wood on the wooden balance beam, and a tree stump was badly splintering, with a sharp edge facing outwards. There were some heavy rocks on the top of the plastic slide during and after the time when children were playing on and around the slide.

Plan of Correction: The balance beam will be sanded. The tree stumped was turned around so the sharp part was not accessible, but it will be trimmed. Rocks were removed from the slide but we will discuss this with the teachers and co-opers.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-330-B
Description: During today's inspection, an item was observed to be in the fall zone of the small plastic preschool slide. Evidence: A chair was directly in front of the slide chute during the time children were observed playing in the house and on the top of the slide.

Plan of Correction: Corrected during inspection.
