Technical Assistance:
Technical assistance today included ways of blocking off areas of the playground when needed.

Comments:
An unannounced monitoring inspection took place today from 10:30 am - 12:15 pm. There were two classes present with 28 children and 6 staff. The rest of the children were on a field trip to the National Gallery. I observed children listening and participating in a special puppet show; playing outdoors; exploring plants and outdoor areas; and eating lunch. Record keeping and medications were well-organized and paperwork was complete. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at brenda.kuhlman@dss.virginia.gov

Violations:
Standard #: 22VAC40-185-270-A
Description: During today's inspection, some equipment of the center was observed not to be maintained in a safe condition. Evidence: The edging of the plastic water table outside was observed to be badly cracked, and an easel in one of the classrooms had a dowel that came out of the wooden bracket stand.

Plan of Correction: The water table will be taped today until it can be replaced. The easel will be fixed, and it will not be used until the rod is securely in place.

Standard #: 22VAC40-185-330-B
Description: During today's inspection, some items were observed to be located in the fall zone of the climbing structure while children were present on the structure, causing the fall zone to not be free of hazardous obstacles as required. Evidence: Two wooden items with pegs which are part of a water chute activity in another part of the playground were observed to be under the playground climbing structure, within the fall zone when children were present on the structure.

Plan of Correction: Removed during inspection. We will talk to staff about fall zones.
