Establish Paternity

Every child deserves the chance to know who their parents are and to receive the support they need.

What is Paternity?

Paternity means who a child’s father is. Establishing paternity means the law says who the father is.

Why Paternity Helps Your Child

Establishing paternity helps your child build a secure future. It can give your child access to:

  • Health insurance and medical support
  • Family medical history
  • Financial support from both parents
  • Important legal rights and protections

For parents who are not married, paternity is not automatically recognized under Virginia law. Establishing paternity creates clear rights and responsibilities for both parents.
